SMART Goals for Summer: A Wellness Coach’s Guide

As a coach, I find it valuable to revisit the fundamentals from time to time—and lately, I’ve been reflecting on the power of SMART goals. I often help clients set meaningful goals that align with their personal values and well-being. With summer approaching, it's the perfect time to refocus and set intentions for growth, whether that’s improving health, deepening social connections, or making space for joy. A great way to structure these intentions is by using SMART goals—an acronym that ensures your goals are:

  • Specific – Clearly define what you want to achieve.

  • Measurable – Establish criteria to track progress.

  • Achievable – Make sure it's realistic within your current circumstances.

  • Relevant – Align it with your values and lifestyle.

  • Time-bound – Set a deadline to stay accountable.

For example, if someone wants to incorporate more movement into their summer routine, a vague goal like “I want to be more active” may not be effective. Instead, using the SMART framework, they could refine it to:

"I will walk 30 minutes, four days a week, in my local park for the next three months to improve my physical and mental well-being."

This goal is specific (walking 30 minutes in a park), measurable (four days a week), achievable (a reasonable commitment), relevant (supports health and well-being), and time-bound (set for three months).

Whether your summer goal is to improve nutrition, deepen relationships, or carve out more time for self-care, using the SMART approach will increase your chances of success. Take a moment to reflect: What small but meaningful step could you take this summer to feel more energized and aligned with your best self?
